Holy Bible, King James Authorised Version of 1611

The King James Bible

It wasn't the first translation of the Biblical Greek and Hebrew Scriptures into English, but it was the first translation that was considered 'accurate' and as a result, was 'approved' or 'authorised' for use in Church of England churches.

The recently crowned King James 1st was a devout Christian and he wanted an accurate English version of the Bible that could be read in churches and understood by ordinary people.

He gave the order for the creation of the new Bible in 1604 and 47 scholars were appointed to accurately translate the Old Testament from the oldest Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament from the Greek Scriptures. The bible was completed in 1611 and the result was truly wonderful and it became known as the Authorised Version of the Holy Scriptures.

By the 18th Century it had superceeded all existing bibles, including the Latin 'Vulgate Version' for all English speaking Scholars, Clergy and Christians and by the 19th Century it had become the most widely printed book in history.

It is truly essential reading for all English speaking Christians and for those who are studying, or just curious about Christianity. Yes, some of the language used is considered 'old fashioned' in the 21st century but there is a beauty in the language used that is truly unparalleled by any Bible that had been produced since.
